Laurie Baker arrived in India from England in the 1940’s to design and build for the Mission to Lepers. After many years of absorption of local building techniques and the use of local materials, he settled in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and designed his own home, The Hamlet, and other buildings. Some are shown here. He designed with the poor and the environment in mind, achieving an aesthetic developed over his years in India.
